What Drives Injection Molding Cost and Lead Time?
A responsible quotation is based on the current CAD, resin, finish, quantity, validation, quality, and delivery requirements. A headline mold price without those inputs hides the decisions that control the program.
What affects mold cost
Geometry
Part size, wall design, tolerances, undercuts, side actions, shutoffs, inserts, ejection, cooling, and cosmetic surfaces determine tool complexity.
Tool strategy
Prototype or production intent, steel, cavities, family-tool risk, cold or hot runner, interchangeability, and expected maintenance change the investment.
Validation
DFM depth, design reviews, T1 quantity, inspection reports, corrections, additional trials, and customer testing affect the complete tooling scope.
What affects part price
- Resin grade, color, additives, preparation, and documentation
- Part weight, runner waste, cycle time, machine and labor requirements

How to get an accurate quote
Send the current model and state what is known, unknown, and negotiable. If a resin, finish, tolerance, quantity, or deadline is a target rather than a requirement, label it clearly. This allows alternatives to be evaluated without silently changing the product intent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why don't you publish a fixed mold price?
Geometry and project scope can change tool construction by a large amount. A fixed headline price would either be misleading or exclude essential work later.
Does a multi-cavity mold always lower cost?
It may lower molding cost at the right volume, but increases tool investment and can increase balance, validation, and maintenance complexity.
What causes the most schedule uncertainty?
Incomplete requirements, late design changes, complex tool actions, material availability, customer test duration, and the number of correction loops are common drivers.
