Injection Molding Materials & Surface Finishes
Material selection starts with the part’s environment and function, then narrows to an exact grade that can be sourced, processed, documented, and validated. A family name such as ABS or PC is not a complete material specification.
Common material families evaluated

Questions that select the grade
Environment
Temperature, UV, moisture, chemicals, cleaners, indoor or outdoor use, and expected life.
Mechanical behavior
Stiffness, impact, fatigue, creep, friction, wear, fastening, and the consequences of failure.
Appearance
Color, gloss, texture, transparency, haze, sink visibility, weld lines, and acceptable cosmetic zones.
Documentation
Flammability, food-contact, medical, environmental, or customer-specific requirements tied to valid grade documents.
Surface finishes and decoration
- Mold texture and polishing defined against geometry, draft, resin, and approved visual standard
- Painting evaluated for resin preparation, adhesion, masking, color, gloss, wear, and environmental exposure
- Printing and laser marking evaluated for artwork, contrast, durability, surface, and part location
- Transparent and high-cosmetic surfaces require early agreement on tool finish, handling, packaging, and inspection
Compliance belongs to the exact grade
Flame, food-contact, biocompatibility, medical, recycled-content, RoHS, REACH, or other statements must be supported by the exact material grade and current documentation applicable to the finished program. A generic material-family datasheet is not enough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you recommend a material from performance requirements?
Yes, as an engineering shortlist. Final selection requires the customer to approve the exact grade, appearance, documentation, test plan, availability, and commercial impact.
Can transparent parts be injection molded?
Yes, when geometry, resin, tool finish, drying, gate, flow, handling, and cosmetic inspection are designed for the required optical result.
Does mold texture hide every cosmetic defect?
No. Texture changes appearance and can reduce or redistribute what the eye notices, but it does not eliminate sink, weld, flow, contamination, or geometry problems.
